Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.īut they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.Īnd that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, Saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.” Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.Īnd about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”Īnd at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”Īnd Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day.'īut he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.Īnd He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.įor He taught His disciples and said to them, 'The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. He is not here for He is risen, as He said. Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.īut the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” But He was speaking of the temple of His body. Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.” He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.Īnd on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,Įven until the consummation, which is determined, Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week Now the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
